International Nordic Ski Training Program
In December of 2019, we established a collaboration with the Department of Kinesiology and Health (DKH) as well as the Shanghai University of Sport (SUS). We in collaboration with Dr. Qin Zhu and Dr. Derek Smith of DKH, we established the International Nordic Ski Traning Program (INSTP). Guided by the UW Nordic Mission Statement and the goals of the UW-SUS collaboration, we are building a diverse network of faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students who have the opportunity to study, research and train through integrated academic and Nordic ski international exchanges. Through this collaboration, we have now had the opportunity select 20 outstanding student athletes whom have joined our team, learned to ski, ski coach and race at an elite level. These athletes are selected in a rigorous process including physical tests, interviews, grit tests and academic standing. These athletes are immersed in full bodymind learning. As they learn how to ski train, they concomitantly learn the academic knowledge needed to be a good racers and coaches.
Our learning outcomes are integrated and we assess the progress of our SUS teammates holistically. They begin their ski learning by skiing on grass and rollerskis. As they transition to snow and learn to race, they show continuous improvement in their technical and tactical skills and this is reflected in their performance. Amongst the first SUS class, all 10 qualified for the national competition.
